HOW THE PERENNIAL TRUTH MEETS PHILOSOPHY
CORRESPONDENCE THEORY OF TRUTH
In metaphysics and philosophy of language, the correspondence theory of truth states that the truth or falsity of a statement is determined only by how it relates to the world and whether it accurately describes (i.e., corresponds with) that world.
Philosophers speak of the correspondence theory of truth. It’s a traditional model of truth. The correspondence theory of truth can be traced back to the ancient Greek civilization, Plato, Aristotle, Aristotle, and so on. Basically what this theory suggests is that, for something to be true for a statement for an idea to be true, you have to be able to observe it, manifesting in reality. Let’s take a religion for example. If the doctrine of your religion purports to know the truth, then if anything that truth should explain the workings of the world and how you perceive the workings of the world you find yourself in. And that would be the test of its completeness and comprehensiveness of its truth. So in other words if your system of truth, your system of knowledge can only explain part of what you’re observing in the world then it’s not a complete system of truth.
Let’s take gender as an issue. So, how is it that there are currently so many definitions of gender? Why is it that some people are transsexual, some people are bisexual, some people are homosexual, some people are lesbian, some people are straight? Some people are asexual. So can your system of truth, can your understanding of the truth explain why this is manifesting in the world? The value of truth, of any system of truth is in its ability to make what you perceive in the world, what is manifesting in the world, understandable? To a rational mind, the whole idea of truth, of knowledge, is that it will be used by a rational mind with logic to gain an understanding of why the world is the way it is. At its most elementary level, for example, a religious system will attempt to define what is good and what is bad. What is moral and what is immoral. But beyond that, a step beyond that would be to create an understanding of what’s manifesting in the world so that one can ultimately arrive at a point of intellectual acceptance.
Historically, most advocates of correspondence theories have been metaphysical realists; that is, they believe that there is a world external to the minds of all humans. This is in contrast to metaphysical idealists who hold that everything that exists, exists as a substantial metaphysical entity independently of the individual thing of which it is predicated, and also to conceptualists who hold that everything that exists is, in the end, just an idea in some mind. However, it is not strictly necessary that a correspondence theory be married to metaphysical realism. It is possible to hold, for example, that the facts of the world determine which statements are true and to also hold that the world (and its facts) is but a collection of ideas in the mind of some supreme being.
The Perennial Truth offers this metaphysical understanding and integration of the un-manifested with the manifested for the individuals journey towards acceptance. The objective : To what degree can I live in harmony with the world, I perceive. Ultimately, spiritually, one wants to create a state of union between the individual ego, the subjective observer, and the world that is being observed. And the spiritual journey is all about creating a union between the seemingly separateness aspects of consciousness.
There is the self consciousness, I, the ego, me, and then there’s the world I perceive. But even the world I perceive is a subjective perception of the world. You’re not truly observing reality but rather reality is passing through the filters of one’s subjective emotion and understanding and sense experience, perception. And so the world that one perceives is really the world according to you, and it’s reflected in one’s consciousness. And within that consciousness is this subjective observer who’s observing this world? So it’s very closely integrated, there’s a there’s a very close synergy between the observer of the world and the world it observes, you know, it’s this whole principle of quantum quantum physics goes into how these different worlds these multiple worlds exist in the mind of the observer. So a test for truth is cannot explain the phenomenon in the world what what is manifesting in your world as reality? So, a question comes back to the individual. Do you have a truth? Do you personally have a truth?
